These are put up for a purpose - to commemorate their illustrious work, remember the noble works and efforts of our benefactors or simply to remind us of our roots and heritage. These people had made it possible for St Michael's to be what it is today. There are so many other commemorative plaques we put up around the school to acknowledge these outstanding individuals. When we see a plaque next time, take note of what's written on it. We can emulate what they did.

Yes, we cherish our past so that we can continue to embrace the future.

When news got to the wushu boys that two generous contributors have agreed to contribute RM1000 each to acquire a pair of lion heads, they were jumping for joy! The boys were at a lost for words when asked what they wanted to say for the good news that came today. Alvin Soo Hang Lok, the president of the Wushu Club, said later that the members are obviously very excited with the latest development as they have been borrowing lion heads and season drums from Ma Ching Association whenever they are invited to perform at functions. Occasionally, items like swords and drums are borrowed from Chin Woo.

The club, which has about 50 members, currently has a pair of worn-out lion heads and ONE drum - a shocking truth as a set of twenty four drums is actually needed for any performances. "During the Michaelian Talentime last year, we were pleased to perform up to our expectation with a set of eight season drums. We borrowed seven drums from outside", said Alvin.

With the kind contribution of RM2,000, we can start scouting for at least a Foshan lion head which is larger, suitable for performances.

A drum which comes with a stand cost about RM300. We are looking for another 8 units, which will cost us RM2,400.

The pathetic cymbal with a hole in it. The boys are getting ready to perform at a charity dinner, making do with what they have.

As this post is written, the boys should be home after a performance at a charity dinner in aid of an old folks home located at Jelapang. On their way there this evening, I was shocked to see that a cymbal a boy was holding has a hole in it. Why are the boys still making use of items which are not usable any more? Sad! The boys' simple determination, drive and dynamism serve as a great and shining example for many of us.
Their involvement in wushu plays a significant part in the historical preservation of Chinese culture and heritage at St Michael's.

Note: We plan to send the damaged pair of lion heads for repair when we have acquired the pair of new ones so that the Club has at least two pairs to use. That would last for many more years. Now we can be rest assured that the items are passed down to many more juniors after this batch.
This simple gesture from our contributors is suffice to show the boys that someone out there still care.

The Monkees are an American pop rock group. Assembled in Los Angeles in 1966 by Robert "Bob" Rafelson and Bert Schneider for the American television series The Monkees, which aired from 1966 to 1968, the musical acting quartet was composed of Americans Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork and Englishman Davy Jones.The band's music was initially supervised by producer Don Kirshner.
The Monkees had a number of international hits which are still heard on pop and oldies stations. These include "(Theme From) The Monkees", "Last Train to Clarksville", "I'm A Believer", "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday". Their albums and singles have sold over 65 million copies worldwide - Wikipedia.

Candidates for new prefects are nominated in Form One by their respective class teachers. Students with good leadership skills, sharp in judgments, good communicative skills and neat in appearance are basis for selection. The test, already in its sixth year, consists questions about the school history, current developments and all things St Michael's.

My e-mail was bombarded with queries as to why I chose 2pm, February 2, 2012 to put up the banner. Wow! It's 22222. Supposed to be an auspicious time and day to announce exciting events for the grand institution? It could be. One thing for sure is the Michaelian community is extremely excited over the Centennial Celebration, particularly the coming event which falls on February 24, 2012. It's the Cake-Cutting Ceremony and the unveiling of the Centennial Official Logo. We are going to announce the winner and all students will be presented with ........... There will be ................
I cannot disclose more but that day will definitely create a lasting memory for all Michaelians. Happy Centennial!

An institution that has left so many fond memories

A HUNDRED years is a long time and for SMK St Michael to withstand the test of time, especially with the ravages of the Second World War, it is indeed a great achievement.
Better known as St Michael’s Institution, the school now joins the likes of other prestigious schools like SMK Anderson, SM Convent and SM Methodist (ACS), which have passed the 100-year mark.
Being an old boy myself, I am happy to note that the school has undergone various infrastructure developments.

The dilapidated primary school block has been flattened and replaced with a four-storey building while the roof and the school chapel at the main building have been renovated.
All this is part of the centennial celebrations that will culminate with a reunion dinner in September.
At the same time, it is a bit sad to know that changes have also taken place in terms of the school culture.
During my interviews with former school Brother Director Datuk Brother Vincent Corkery and Old Michaelians Association president Adrian Tsen, I was told that the new breed of students are different from the ones before.
They had lamented that the younger generation of students tend to go home straight to their computer games or tuition classes after school rather than stay back for extra curricular activities or sports.
I do agree with them that students should spend more time in school to participate in school activities.
I understand that attending school is not just about studying.

Long history: The school will turn 100 and has begun celebrating its centennial celebration.

It is also about living out the life of a student, growing up and learning more about ourselves and self-improvement.
Isn’t that what holistic education is about?
I remember some of my “good old days” being part of the school’s military band where I spent most of my time practising on the trumpet after school hours.
I also recall spending a lot of my afternoons inside the Photography Club’s darkroom processing photographs. Till now, the smell of those pungent chemicals comes to mind whenever I think about school.
Those were also good times where all of us would rush to the school field to play “popiah” (a version of dodgeball which uses the tennis ball) after finishing our exams.
Such are the little things that make me cherish my childhood and these will definitely be the stories I would be telling my children, rather than say I grew up in front of the television or slain trolls and shot aliens on the computer all day.
I am proud to say that I have lived the life of what it means to be a true Michaelian and enjoyed every minute of it.
I feel truly blessed to have been a part of its long and illustrious journey.

Alma mater turns 100 (The Star, January 27, 2012)

SMK St Michael Ipoh was more than just a school. It was “home” to some of those who studied there in the late 1960s.
Old Michaelian Association president Adrian Tsen, who completed his Form Six in 1969, said during his time, students would stay back at the school library until 10pm to study.
“We started our day at about 7am and stayed back until late in the evenings.

“We would then go home to take our bath and have dinner before heading back to the library at about 7pm,” Tsen said, adding that it was so much fun back then.
Reminiscing about school life as it geared up towards its centennial celebrations this year, Tsen told The Star that the La Salle Brothers would stay back late each night to tutor the weaker students.
“Some of these students, who excelled in sports but were poor in their studies, were told to come back to school at night.
“The Brothers made sure everyone got a holistic education, in both academic and co-curricular activities.
“We cried our eyes out when we finished Form Six and had to leave school,” he said.
Tsen, who had captained the school’s rugby team and represented Perak in water polo then, said the school had previously produced some very good athletes.
“We used to have good hockey and rugby teams and we were well known as a tennis school,” he said.
Tsen, however, noted that it was a completely different scenario these days.

Historic structure: The architecture of the St Michael’s Institution was designed by French La Sallean Brother Verniew Auguste in 1923.

“Students hardly stay back in school now.

“They head on straight for tuition classes after school or go home to their computer games,” he said.

He added that the bond between students was also not like it used to be.
“The students are no longer as close.
“The teachers are also less attached to the school and their students due to the fact that they are transferable after two years,” he said.
Nevertheless, Tsen said that the school’s turning 100 years was a great achievement.
“We are actually quite young compared to other notable schools like SMK Methodist (ACS), SMK Perempuan Methodist and SM Anderson.
“I am excited and looking forward to our grand reunion dinner in September.
“We are going to have it at the school field and it is going to be a blast when all the old faces step back into school!” he said.

DOING away with streaming according to academic ability and mixing together brilliant and weak students is probably the best thing Datuk Brother Vincent Corkery has done for SMK St Michael Ipoh.
“In the last 40 years, I think our students have performed admirably well, unlike at schools with a rigid streaming system,” the 83-year-old former Brother Director said.
Speaking to The Star as the school celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, Brother Vincent said it is not the best idea to separate the good students from the weaker ones.
“We integrate them so that they can help each other. Through this, we also promote greater loyalty among them. Those who are good at their studies can assist those that are weaker while those who excel in games can teach their fellow friends a

trick or two,” he said.

He added that it was also the school’s policy to provide its students with a holistic education, a system that remains a practice to this day.
The school, on the other hand, has changed much since the first day he started teaching there in 1958, Brother Vincent recalled.
“We had about 500 pupils at both the primary and secondary levels.
“We now have about 5,000 students combined,” he said, adding that he used to teach English, Literature and History to Form Six students.
The school’s ground, added Brother Vincent, had changed tremendously since its humble beginnings of a small Malay-style bungalow to the current several blocks of buildings.
“As the population grew, we had to find ways to accommodate our students and to make them feel comfortable,” he said, attributing the school’s infrastructure development to the Old Michaelians’ Association.
“They really contributed in a huge way, managing to find funds without government assistance to build the four-storey primary school block back in 2006. They also refurbished the roof and the chapel in the main building last year,” he said.
Brother Vincent, however, noted some less positive changes at the school.
“The grass on the school field is very green. It shows that it is under-utilised.
“When school is over, the students go back home to their computers and television programmes unlike back in the days when students stayed back till late evening to play games or do their revision,” he said.
With the school’s centennial celebrations kicking into full gear this year, Brother Vincent said he was proud to be a part of the school.
“It has been an amazing journey for the school to be a 100 years old.
I hope we can continue to excel in our academics and co-curricular activities and for our students to continue carrying with them the Michaelian Spirit to great heights.
“Let’s not forget our late Brother Ultan Paul Rosario who is a true icon and symbol of the school.
“He was my good friend, mentor and companion,” Brother Vincent said of the late Brother Director, whom with other La Salle Brothers had left strong, lasting impressions on the students and teachers.

Happy Chinese New Year, remembering our Wushu boys

Happy Chinese New Year to all members of the Michaelian fraternity. It's time again for a little reflection and resolution. While writing this post, I remember the Wushu Club boys who have contributed much to the alma mater especially during the time their services are needed at functions. They have been making do with the only two lion heads for years which they really treasure.

Many of us had also noticed and thought to ourselves how the boys demonstrated impressively their drumming prowess at last year's Talentime with at least eight drums. Sad to say, many were borrowed from Chinese associations and schools. I will find out how many actually belong to SMI Wushu Club!

The boys, as I have observed for many years, are an enthusiastic lot, tirelessly learning new skills on weekdays and on many occasions, weekends. One thing I salute is Michaelians never complaint irrespective of whatever situations they are in.
As we celebrate our 100 years, why not do something for our boys by acquiring a pair of lion heads for them? Or perhaps a pair of drums. This gesture would certainly make all of them very happy. I can be contacted at peterkhiew@yahoo.com

St Michael’s turns 100 (The Star, January 3, 2012)

LOCATED in the heart of Ipoh city with its iconic beige building, SMK St Michael has produced generations of public figures and talented individuals.
Now, the institution — one of the oldest schools in Perak — is looking forward to its centennial celebrations.
Starting out with only 37 students in a Malay-style bungalow at its current location on Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam, the school established by Rev Father J.B. Coppin in 1912 has expanded its enrolment to over 2,000 students today.

Milestone: Preparations are under way for St Michael’s centennial celebration.

Now, along with buildings like the Ipoh High Court, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, and the Birch Memorial clock tower, the school better known as St Michael’s Institution, is part of an educational Heritage Walk programme organised by the Perak Tourist Association.
Centennial Celebration committee member Peter Khiew said the school had undergone tremendous changes since the early days.
The main school building, which was accorded the status of a heritage site in 1986, was constructed in 1922 while further expansion works were carried out in 1951 and in the 1960s.
“History has it that the school was established to give those who did not manage to enrol themselves in secondary schools in Ipoh a chance at continuing their education.

Modest beginning: St Michael’s Institution started out in a rented bungalow in 1912.

“As time went by, the school became popular and more parents showed keen interests in sending their children to St Michael’s,” Khiew told The Star.
Relating the school’s illustrious past, Khiew said it was used as a British Army transit hospital camp during World War II in 1941.
“During that time, Japanese warplanes gunned the building and damaged the roof,” he said, adding that looters also stole furniture and books from the school.
The Japanese army later used the school as its headquarters, calling it the “Perak Shu Seicho”.
“The building served many purposes during the Japanese Occupation.
"It was used as a police department, treasury, air raid shelter, governor’s room and communication room,” he said, adding that the school reopened on Sept 24, 1945 after the Japanese surrendered.
In 1957, the school opened a primary school section, which was expanded two years later to accommodate its growing pupil population.
An entirely new four-storey building for the primary school section was put up in memory of late Brother Director Brother Ultan Paul Rosario in 2006 to replace its old single-storey building.
To commemorate its anniversary, Khiew said a few activities had started since 2010 and it would culminate with the 200-table Michaelian Centennial Reunion Dinner at the school on Sept 29 this year.
“It is going to be a grand occasion. We are expecting thousands of former students to be there.
“Some have already made arrangements to return to Ipoh from where they are in different parts of the world,” he said.
In preparation for the big day, the school has put up a 4.87m-high signboard outside the school.
The signboard carries the ideals of the school and honours outstanding and remarkable luminaries of the school.
Among them are its first headmaster P.J. Morsingh, Brother Paul, former Brother Director Datuk Brother Vincent J. Corkery and the building’s architect Brother Vernier Augustus.
“Work was also carried out to refurbish the termite-infested school chapel,” Khiew said.

A Sea Of Michaelians and the Majestic Grand Old Dame

The Centennial Run, the first of many other programmes organised to commemorate St Michael's 100 years, was successfully organised last Saturday. It was an event hugely anticipated by teachers and students even on the first week of school as it would be a day when St Michael's officially welcome the centennial celebration for the year. Banners were prepared, medals were designed, the sports personnels got busy and yes, words travelled. Old boys wrote to each other via e-mails, Twitter and Facebook about the Run, which is considered legendary by many. A handful turned up to mingle and take part.

Participated by some 1700 old and present Michaelians, including teachers and parents, the Run that day reflected an awesome spirit of comradeship among teachers whose combined efforts had brought about a very successful Michaelian gathering. The boys and girls, on the other hand, held their heads high in pride knowing well that their alma mater is celebrating 100. They could be seen in a very celebratory and festive mood throughout the day.

WOW!.

After leaving school in 1981 - a distance of 31 years, my first walk along the "RiverBank" although it should be a cross country run, gave me peaceful feeling in reflections to the school days, teachers and friends!

Yes, we should be back more often to lift up the Michaelian spirit especially to the young ones, who will carry the touch of "Valiant and True Michaelians " for another 100 years!

Hope to see more of 1980's gathering in the school to the Centennial Celebration and please mark 4th Dec 2012 to your diary as it is the day St.Michael's was born!

Many of us have discussed about this run and we plan to organize something similar on annual dinner day.

The run today was refreshing for me after not having run along the particular riverbank for more than 30 years. It is quite nostalgic. Sadly the Kinta River is any clearer than our earlier days although a walking pavement is dine up.

I met Bro.Vincent this morning. He is getting old but still remember your kind and huge contribution (directed to Benjamin Lee) to the school chapel last year because I mentioned about your visit last year in April just before he went back to Ireland for his annual holidays.

First School Drama At SMI was NOT in 1955?

It is documented that the first play at St Michael's was in 1955 when it staged the "Poet of Ispaha", a show directed by the late Brother Ultan Paul. However, recent discoveries reveal that it might not be the case.

The British Battalion Plaque Is BACK at St Michael's

After decades of safe-keeping by war historian Mr Chye Kooi Loong, the bronze plaque bearing the historic British Battalion was finally returned to the place it was born - St Michael's Institution, Ipoh. The Michaelian Heritage team made a journey to Kampar in the morning of Friday, January 6, 2012 to ceremoniously receive the plaque from Mr Chye for the alma mater.
It was a very significant occasion because the formation of the British Battalion at SMI to fight against the invading Japanese was witnessed personally by Brother Ultan Paul. In fact, during the arrival of the British soldiers at St Michael's on either 18/19 December 1941, Brother Paul was there to welcome the soldiers.

"I was here at that time and I remember it well", he said. "The Surreys came here first - 18th December and the Leicestershire arrived later in the evening. They were put into the classrooms on the ground and first floors and the school hall. They stayed for three days before leaving the school in the early morning of 23rd December 1941", recalled Brother Paul.

The British Battalion was an ad hoc formation created on 20 December 1941 during the Battle of Malaya.It was amalgamated from two regular British Army battalions, 2nd Bn, East Surreys Regiment under Lieut. Col. G E Swinton MC and 1st Bn, The Leicestershire Regiment under Lieut. Col. Charles Esmond Morrison, OBE.

Both battalions suffered heavy casualties in North West Malaya during the early stages of the Japanese invasion so it was decided to amalgamate the two battalions.The British Battalion was commanded by Lieut. Col. Morrison; Lieut. Col. Swinton was badly wounded during the Battle of Jitra. The battalion fought with great courage, taking many casualties and earning much respect from other units. They were involved in fierce fighting during the Battle of Kampar (30 December 1941–2 January 1942), before joining in the fighting retreat back to Singapore. The Battalion was also involved in the short but fierce battle for Singapore. They surrendered to the Japanese along with other units of the British Army under General Arthur Percival in February 1942. Many of the British battalion died in Japanese P.O.W. camps. Of the estimated 500 soldiers at the amalgamation, barely 130 survived the war.

It will be 70th Anniversary of the formation of British Battalion this December. The question now is are we going to celebrate this historic formation at SMI? It means a lot to us, Michaelians, as this historical moment took place on our home field. We have spoken to historian Chye Kooi Loong and he is willing to help us to organise the celebration. He is even willing to loan us photographs and other apparels related to this historical event. So Michaelians, need your feedback fast. Harneak Singh, 5A3 1980.

Good start.History should be recorded if not it will be forgotten. We should also make an effort to contact the Japanese embassy and get the details of the Japanese Battalions who were occupying St Michael's. Maybe some old photographs of Japanese soldiers in the school - Lawrence Brindes

Note from the Editor: The SMI Centennial Celebration committee during the previous meeting had given the nod for the plaque to be fixed to a wall at St Michael's Institution. We are currently working on the special day and the guests to be invited. To start with, the British High Commissioner, officials from the British Council and perhaps the spouses or children of members of the British Battalion be invited to witness the historic moment when the plaque is mounted at St Michael's Ipoh.

I believe there are still regiments, local and abroad, who hold these members and their outstanding sacrifices vividly in their mind.

Form One students - Full of Determination

Eager To Learn.. The boys on the first day of school

More than 260 Form One students reported for "duty" at St Michael's Institution, Ipoh on the first day of 2012 academic year. We have a total of 279 students on our list of those coming in for Form One this year. Applications are still being processed at the department for more boys to be admitted into St Michael's.
SMI is still under the controlled schools catergory, therefore all applications have to be made through the department. We are pleased that Form One still has 9 classes, all occupying the first floor at the main block.
The batch this year is very determined, just like their parents who accompanied their charges on the first day. Orientation is still on-going (until Monday, Jan 9) as it allows the young boys to familiarise themselves with the secondary school life, the school culture and its great tradition. Induction sessions from uniformed units and clubs are held during the orientation session to expose the boys to what St Michael's actually stands for. Most importantly, we told them they are of a special batch to be in St Michael's as it coincides with the school's centennial celebration this year.

Come To Learn, Leave To Serve ...

Rest assured, we at St Michael's are working hard to groom and nurture these young boys, just like their seniors who had undergone similar teaching and guidance at SMI.

St Michael's sets a steady footing in our centennial celebration this year when 59 boys scored all As' for their PMR 2011. This could well be an excellent gift for the alma mater in its preparations which are already going into full gear. When the other two public examination results are released in February or March this year, we aim for more goodies from our young Michaelians. Our boys in a jubilation mood after the event!

Thirty scouts from the 02 Kinta Scout Troop attended the Shiang Yang Scout Gathering 2011, themed "Scouting Footprints, Energize The Hope" in Bercham recently. SMI troop took part in four competitions namely Backwoodsmen Cooking Competition, Modern Cooking Competition, Knots Competition and Sketch Competition.
Weeks of intense preparations paid off handsomely for our boys. They bagged home the top prizes for Modern Cooking Competition and Sketch Competition.
We emerged as runner-ups for the Backwoodsmen Cooking Competition.
Congratulations boys! Another feather in the cap for St Michael's.

Thirty One Long Years !

Old Michaelians, Class of 1980, like Harneak Singh and Thomas Wong, got a pleasant surprise when their best buddy in school who left Ipoh to further his studies in New Zealand, returned home for a short break.

Gerry Tsen, 48, left for "the land of long white cloud" to study accountancy and after graduation, he settled down at the country, working as an accountant in one of the government agencies.
After catching up old times with his siblings and family members, he whispered to his elder brother, Mr Adrian Tsen, whether he has ways to contact all his former classmates. Within minutes, connections were established.
We got together and talked about the good ole' days at St Michael's.
Obviously, when we had a walk in the school, there were so many changes. What it used to be the "old smokehouse" is now two well-ventilated, modern toilets. Tuckshop? Canteen? Ha! We call it Foodcourt now. The Brothers' Quarters have been converted into classes for Form Six students, the chapel has been refurbished and we have a pavilion now for our activities and shade. Thirty years ago, the only shade we had were some trees grown at the side of the field.

The Lecture Theater is now "La Salle Auditorium", the rough walking path at the side of the field has been replaced with inter-locking bricks which St Michael's built to last! The painting of the entire school building, including the classes, was carried out to commemorate our 100 years.
The 30-minute walk was suffice to reminisce many good, ole' memories, something which I believe is agreeable to many old boys after visiting the alma mater.
Gerry, thanks for the wonderful and inspiring moments spent with us. It was great to see you again after 30 long years!

What's Behind The School Rally?

The popularity of our school rally never fades and is still sung with enthusiasm in all our schools in Malaysia and Singapore. It is also sung in our schools in Hong Kong and in the Philippines.

What is the origin? The rousing Irish tune known as O’Donnell Abu was adopted by Brother Marcian Cullen 1868-1938, former director of St Michael’s. Brother Marcian is remembered as a saint and a scholar. He composed the words.

The opening verse dramatises “Duty’s sweet call”. Duty to self, to God, to family, to society – adds sweetness to life, to our relationships. The chorus calls Michaelians to be Valiant and True. Valiant means facing life with courage, and True means being honest, trustworthy and loyal as a matter of Michaelian pride. In my experience these great qualities can be found in Michaelians for generations wherever they go.
We may wish to listen to the original tune which goes back to 16^th century Ireland. Several versions are available on the Internet. Try the link above.

Asia-Pacific Lasallians Educators' Congress (APLEC8) in Manila

A Brief Report From Manila: -

The 8th APLEC was themed "Living the LaSallian Values In The Asia-Pacific Region". The congress was attended by some 88 delegates from Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and India. A sole Lasallian educator came from Pakistan.

It was a rich learning process for the delegates during the four-day session. Just like any other Lasallian-based programs held anywhere in the world, an overview of the key events of the life of St. John Baptist de La Salle is customary. Key events of the founder's life are the very foundation and principles all Lasallian schools are administered and run today. Emphasis are on living lives of simplicity, a heart for children, discretion in scolding and corrections, provision of education, character building, youth formation and teaching leadership.

The congress also highlighted the Lasallian values of Faith, Service and Communion in Mission. This approach has to be our fundamental ingredients to produce wholesome individuals.
Presentations and personal sharing were from Ms Tracy Adams of Australia's Boys Town and "Foundation of Lasallian Spirituality" by Brother Michael Broughton, fsc.
Delegates had the opportunity to visit and have dinner at two La Salle universities - De La Salle College of St Benilde in Malate and De La Salle University in Manila. We also visited De La Salle University in Dasmarinas, well-known for its environmental conservation effort. It was an hour bus journey from Metro Manila.
In the Philippines, there are 17 educational institutions, which include colleges, schools and non-school based entities.

On Day 3, delegates were divided into eight different groups for an exposure program in selected outreach communities of a school or a non-school based apostolate- to have an idea on how values formation is being addressed or needs to be addressed. I chose Salikneta Farm, a research and laboratory farm in Bulacan, located in some part of Luzon, in the City of San Jose Del Monte, a rough 3-hour ride from the hotel. The 64-hectare farm, managed by De La Salle Araneta University, is currently used for forestry and agricultural operations by its students.
To sum up, it was a worthwhile and beneficial trip to Manila. Apart from sharing thoughts and ideas with fellow educators from the region of Asia-Pacific, I had the opportunity to meet up with many other comrades and fellow Lasalle Brothers from countries like Thailand, Sri Lanka and the Philippines. I salute them for their continued persistence and hardwork despite their many challenges, constraints and obstacles in their respective countries towards education for the young.

Master Chan Khin Seng-Our Condolence

Mr Chan Khin Seng passed away on December 7, 2011. He was a student of SMI and later joined the teaching staff immediately after WW2 till 1976. After retirement, he joined Old Michaelian Association and held the post of Vice President for many years.
There are many current luminaries who were under his guidance and tutelage.
Wake will be at his residence at No 6 Tingkat Hock Lee, Tmn Hock Lee, Ipoh. Funeral will be held on Friday 9th December 2011.

Radar Expert Wins Science Achievement Award - A Michaelian

World class innovation to shield Defence ships and aircraft from radar surveillance has earned a DSTO scientist a prestigious Australian award for achievement in defence science.

Minister for Defence Science and Personnel Warren Snowdon has presented the 2011 Minister's Award for Achievement in Defence Science to Cheng Anderson for her pioneering role in reducing the vulnerability of Australia’s Defence platforms over three decades.

Mr Snowdon said Dr Anderson is the principal architect of a world leading capability that allows the Australian Defence Force to predict, measure and reduce the visibility of its ships and aicraft to radar systems.

“Before Dr Anderson began her work thirty years ago Defence only had a limited capability to protect its assets adequately.

“Dr Anderson’s work has been vital in improving the stealth capabilities and ensuring the survivability of our military aircraft, ships and land vehicles,” Mr Snowdon said.

The work has involved the development of computer models to predict a platform’s visibility to radar, known as the radar cross section. The cross section can also be measured experimentally validating the computer model predictions.

The resulting information makes it possible to know where treatment should be applied to reduce a platform’s cross section.
“These are significant developments in self-protection for Defence assets and I congratulate Dr Anderson for her foresight and technical achievements,” Mr Snowdon said.

“I would also like to thank Dr Anderson on behalf of all Defence personnel for her hard work, which will save lives, while improving the capability and efficiency of our defence forces.”

“This award recognises the rare distinction of an individual scientist being solely responsible for establishing a critical defence capability,” he said.

“Dr Anderson has been extremely focussed and successful in applying this capability in the maritime, air and land environments as well as in key areas such as support to operations, through-life support of existing platforms, and acquisition projects.”

Dr Anderson is the second female scientist to have won the Minister’s Achievement Award since Dr Jackie Craig in 2001.

The Minister’s achievement award has been presented annually since 1988 to a DSTO scientist who has made an outstanding scientific contribution to enhance Defence effectiveness and efficiency. The award includes a $15,000 cash prize.

Asia-Pacific Lasallians Educators' Congress (APLEC8) in Manila

APLEC 8 will be held in Manila, the Philippines on December 4 to 9, 2011. I will be attending the congress, together with 18 other delegates from Malaysia, who include Brother Ambrose Loke, Brother Andrew Loke, Brother Michael Kum and Brother Anthony Rogers. The Congress, which will be held in Microtel Mall of Asia in Manila, is themed "Living the Lasallian Values in the Asia-Pacific Region".
It builds on the experience in the last APLEC 2008 in Hong Kong and aims to emphasize on actual methodologies in promoting and integrating the Lasallian values in the educational process, even in the context of non-formal/non-school-based apostolates.
Among the areas of discussion are:
a. To have a working knowledge of the life and values of St. John Baptist De La Salle
as a person of faith, zeal and communion;
b.To understand the various modes of values promotion/integration for the students, faculty, alumni and staff present in the Asia-Pacific Region via different sessions;
c.To have an experience of planning and preparation of values integration/promotion activities or material in the participants’ ministerial areas of responsibility across various sectors (students, alumni, faculty and staff);
d. To create opportunities for collaboration and sharing among Asia-Pacific Lasallian educators in the area of promoting Lasallian values; and
e. To continue and sustain what was shared in the last APLEC 2008 in Hong Kong.

A Letter From An Old Boy

Letters and little notes do arrive regularly in my mailbox. These are normally written by old boys who really want to know how St Michael's is doing. Some left school decades ago while others might be just last year but their thoughts and attachments are still strongly linked to the alma mater. I am pleased they find this blog useful in linking them to the happenings and developments in the school. Below is a letter from a former student who currently doing his Masters in United States.

Dear Mr. Khiew,

How are you? I've been following your updates at your blog about SMI, and though I have not commented much (my postgraduate studies are taking quite a lot of time - I could only afford to read, and then get on with my work again), I really appreciate your efforts to let us Michaelians keep in touch with the latest news in school. Your blog is, as of now, the only tie I have left with the school whom I can count on the latest goings-on.

I have been in the United States (at Texas Tech University) for about four months already, with a one-week break in mid-October when I went back to Ipoh to attend my graduation ceremony (for my Bachelor's degree) at UTP. Though I intended to visit SMI during my short one-week stay, unfortunately that intention never materialised due to my hectic schedule. Alas, the next time I will be able to visit SMI is most likely in the summer of 2012.

I am very happy to read that 200 tables have been sold out for the Centennial Celebrations Dinner on September next year. I think this is a rather remarkable feat, and a sign of how Michaelians cherish their schooling moments. I am actually quite surprised that William Liew, a fellow 2005 Form 5 graduate, actually booked three tables, so I believe there will be at least 30 of my batch-mates attending this dinner. It is also quite remarkable to me because friends at my age now are mostly living out of Ipoh in search of a stable career, or preparing themselves for their final examinations in university. It is indeed heartening that there are friends who are willing to take the time to go all the way back to Ipoh (if they were elsewhere) to participate in this joyous event.

ICE CREAM MAN.. WE FOUND HIS TRISHAW

The Trishaw of SMI Ice-Cream Man -A Piece of Fond Memory

We ran a story about Mohd Ali, the St Michael's ice-cream man on October 18, 2007.
"....At the foodcourt, SMI ice-cream man always cuts a lonely figure. He is also a man of few words and because of that, not many people know that his name is Mohd Ali. That lonely man of 82 is not lonely anymore. He is now back in India, a country where he came from when he was a very young man. His wife and two daughters are still there."
All the years of selling ice-cream, Mohd Ali had not used any motorised vehicles to transport his weighty metal container to and from school to his Kinta Height flat - a distance of at least a km. For five days a week, Mohd Ali (imagine his age) would cycle on his trishaw(beca), struggling on his pedal power when he encountered the slopes and patiently enduring the blaring horns from vehicles when he moved too slow. He had to cycle from the school to the French Bakery every two days to get fresh stock of bread as "he knew pupils and teachers alike like it".

All the years of hardship had somehow weakened him and that contributed to his frequent bouts of asthmatic attacks. "It was getting very serious early this year, rendering him very fragile and weak. Still he wanted to come to school to sell. The noodle man, Ah Fatt, helped him greatly by carrying his goods to school," Solaiappan said, adding that Mohd Ali would just sit at his stall and attending to his young and eager customers.
Solaiappan is SMI Kacang Putih Man.

His health deteriorated further in June 2007. Mohd Ali decided to vacate his humble abode at the flat and to return to India. He was also advised by his sons-in-law who are working in Johor and KL to stop working for good. At last, he relented.
SMI ice cream man left behind only two items in St Michael's. One is his faithful trishaw, the other is our sweet memory of this faithful old man, one who has spent virtually his entire life in St Michael's.
Mohd Ali had to go without saying goodbye to all Michaelians. Deep down, Mohd Ali considers himself a son of St Michael's and he left with a very heavy heart.
"He spoke highly of the school, the Brothers and the old boys. He remembers Brother Paul and Brother Vincent vividly and always spoke on the ways they managed the school. His greatest joy was being able to serve here in St Michael's," Solaiappan said.

A gift from Mr Yeap to the Michaelian Heritage Gallery

As we have mentioned, he left behind a trishaw. I have been tracing Mohd Ali's trishaw for years. It was last year that Brother Matthew informed me that Mr Yeap Mok Chin, currently running a fruit stall at the SMI foodcourt was in possession of the trishaw.
"Mohd Ali asked me whether I want to buy the "beca". He was willing to part with it as he was going back to India. He said he has no intention to return to Malaysia," Mr Yeap recalled.
Mr Yeap offered the Ice-Cream man RM50 and he readily accepted. My Yeap has been taking care of the trishaw for the past 5 years. We are grateful that Mr Yeap is willing to donate the trishaw to the Michaelian Heritage Gallery for posterity.
We are going to send the trishaw for restoration because the metal frame is heavily rusted. Further deterioration may cause the frame and other parts to break off.
Our efforts to preserve all things Michaelian are worth-while. We will keep all of you posted soon on this story.

CAR WASH AT SMI

The spirit of industriousness was clearly demonstrated among senior members of the Prefectorial Board when they pooled their time and resources to raise fund for their annual activities. Armed with buckets, water and car shampoo, the boys diligently washed cars and motorcycles belonging to teachers and their fellow friends - RM6 for a car and RM3 for a motorcycle. At the end of the day, the boys were soaked with water and sweat but it was a worthwhile effort. It was not how much money you collected at the end of the day but the teamwork, job satisfaction and spirit of service that count!

Happy Birthday

Mr Adrian Tsen, OMA president hosted a birthday dinner for Brother Vincent Corkery at the Wong Kok Restaurant in Pasir Pinji. The seven-course dinner was attended by the entire committee members, together with SMI former principal Mr Louis Rozario Doss. Brother Vincent, who has stamped his legacy within the Lasallian fraternity, is 83 years old.

The occasion, as it turned out, was actually a dinner to honour two other Michaelians as well - Mr Adrian Tsen and Mr Louis, whose birthday fall on November 5 and November 3 respectively. Our best wishes and warmest regards to these three pillars of SMI.

The Pride of Workmanship award, first initiated by the Rotary Club of Pennant Hills, Australia in 1975, recognizes the qualities and achievements of individuals, their attitudes, commitment and dedication, in their respective fields of work or vocation. Awardees are selected for their sense of responsibilities, initiative and passion in their chosen vocation.
Awards are based on the fields of Community Service, Medicine, Peforming Arts and Animal Care. Brother Vincent receives the award under the field of Education.
The Michaelian community congratulates Brother Vincent for this very special award.
Below is the citation for Brother Vincent, read out by fellow Rotarian Mr Wu Chee Tatt, a Michaelian, whose life was immensely touched by Brother Vincent and fellow Brothers during his school days at St Michael's.
President Jawahar, honored Guests, and fellow Rotarians,
I am privileged to read out the citation for a very special man.

Dato’ Brother Vincent Corkery is a member of the La Salle Brothers and their mission is to meet the educational and welfare needs of young people worldwide, especially the poor. The Brothers live their Catholic faith through the values of love, compassion, justice and belief in the human dignity of each person.

Brother Vincent received his first degree in history and political thought at the National University of Ireland. He later received the certificate in education from Cambridge University. He was the Brother Director of St. Michael’s Institution from 1971 to 1976, and from 1986 to 1988.

On his retirement, he took up the post of Director of the La Salle Centre, which entails maintaining an overview of the administration and the courses run at the Centre. He also maintains contact with St Michael's, especially as regards policy decisions, and the property. He is now 83 years … young.

In Malaysia, La Salle Schools like St John’s and St Xavier’s have shown that they have withstood the test of time. After all, St John’s has produced Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, the present Prime Minister; Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Home Minister; Datuk Sri Nazir Tun Razak, the banker and younger brother of Najib and Raja Nazrin Shah, the Raja Muda of Perak.

St Xavier’s produced Karpal Singh, the opposition leader; Tun Hamid Omar, the former Lord President and Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. (This is not to say that other Schools do not have illustrious sons. I understand that Botak Chin came from ACS.)

Ladies & gentlemen, no words can adequately describe a lifetime of contribution, and I will not make the attempt.
Brother Vincent, your presence here tonight can only serve to inspire us to redouble Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self.

Brother Vincent, I know that the La Salle Brothers live on in the hearts of every Michaelian. And on behalf of all Michaelians worldwide, may I say, we love you.

Kwong Hou Mun, a Form One boy just received his coupons to buy food at the foodcourt. In St Michael's, boys are well-taken care of as we believe no Michaelians are to go hungry. Allocations for food coupons for deserving students are set aside by the Parent-Teacher Association and these boys are identified by teachers who then put up a request to the school. Just look at the boys who share the joy of Kwong when he finally has some money to buy food at the foodcourt just like other boys. Yes, his favourite food is curry noodle and he used his first coupons to buy that!

SMI Multi-Purpose Hall & Auditorium In The Making?

The SMI Centennial Committee, headed by Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and ably assisted by Mr Adrian Tsen and Mr Joseph Michael Lee have touched an amazing and astonishing milestone in our 100 years of existence.
Yes, it has got to do with SMI multi-purpose hall (as we call it now). A team has been formed to look into the realisation of a hall to cater to the ever-expanding needs of the Michaelian fraternity. I must salute these notable old boys who work endlessly and devotedly, all these years.
As a start, renowned architect, fellow Lasallian and an old Xaverian Mr Jimmy Lim has been very kind to offer his expertise in exploring the current and future needs of the building. He arrived on October 23, 2011 to present his proposal based on his earlier assessment on the project - location, size, facilities and viability. The initial plan would have a hall to cater to dinners, large-scaled seminars or official functions or any IT expositions and book fairs. We are also going to have a 500-seat auditorium, suitable for any types of plays, musical concerts or symposiums.
Other details will be worked out later at the next centennial meeting.
The project, believed to be massive, will cover the existing car park and basketball court.

St Michael's A Place To Rest For British Soldiers

On 18th December 1941, the 2nd Battalion The East Surrey Regiment and the 1st Battalion The Leicestershire Regiment, paused at St Michael's Institution, Ipoh for a well- needed rest after an almost continuous withdrawal through Kedah and North Perak in the face of fierce attacks by the Japanese forces.

They stayed until the early hours of 23rd December 1941. The Japanese had the upper hand in their onslaught as they had air superiority and tanks. The British did not have a single tank in Malaya.

While at SMI, the British troops were allowed by the Brothers to stay in the classrooms of the main block on all floors. At that time, the West wing and the East wing of the Main block did not exist. The armoured cars, bren gun carriers and lorries were lined up outside the school in front and under the trees at the back.

The Brothers allowed the food for the soldiers to be cooked in the Brothers' kitchen. Brother Paul and the others were very accommodating and years later after the war, the soldiers still remembered the warmth of the Brothers and grateful appreciation noted by the soldiers who cherished the simple gesture.

Knowing full well that they would have to face the Japanese Forces in a bitter battle soon, the Reverend Henry Babbs held a service for the Anglican soldiers in the chapel. The Catholic chaplain, a Father Ward gave the Catholic soldiers a General Absolution as there was no to time to hear them individually.There was also a mass for them in the chapel. The chapel figured significantly for the Christian soldiers and for many of them it would be the last time in a Christian sanctuary. One soldier who was not a Catholic asked Bro. Paul for a scapular. Bro Paul gave him a Sacred Heart scapular which he carried with him all the time and he still had with him after the war. The soldier was Private Jock Perrin of the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He passed away at Portsmouth in 1983.

It was at this time,on the 20th of December 1941, that Lt. Gen. A.E. Percival decided to amalgamate the two badly depleted battalions into one battalion to be known as The British Battalion. It was the first time in modern British military history that two battalions were made into one, due to heavy casualties suffered in the opening battles of the Malayan Campaign .

St Michael's Institution had the honour of witnessing this birth of the British Battalion which lasted until 14th of February 1942. This was an important part of British Military history and SMI will always be featured whenever the origins of The British Battalion is spoken of.

In memory of this historic occasion, a specially made brass plaque was donated by Jeffrey Liew to be placed in the school as a memorial to the British Battalion and the unique role that SMI played. This plaque was similar to the one at St Andrew's Cathedral in Singapore.

Unfortunately, the powers that be in the State of Perak five years ago, and certain officials, refused to allow this historical plaque to be installed in the school on a matter of pride which could have been solved easily, by all parties concerned . Five years later in 2008, this plaque still remains to be installed in a place of honour at SMI.

Local war historian, 80 year old, Mr Chye Kooi Loong is the custodian of this plaque and awaits the day when he can place it in the school for posterity.

On An Assignment -- To Meet Up With War Historian Chye Kooi Loong

Mr Harneak Singh and Peter Khiew (blogger) paid a visit to Kampar-based Mr Chye Kooi Loong, a renowned war historian and former Home Guard warden during the Emergency. He is a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), awarded by the Queen of England.

Mr Chye spent seven years researching and documenting the Battle of Kampar (30 December 1941 – 2 January 1942), an engagement of the Malayan Campaign during World War II involving British and Indian troops from the 11th Indian Infantry Division and the Japanese 5th Division.

Why were we there in Kampar? Anything to do with the Battle of Kampar, St Michael's or the British Battalion? We managed to document many important events and at the same time, made a few new discoveries, particularly on the wall-embedded Chubb safe at the ground floor.

The Chapel Comes Alive

The Chapel, a paradise to many and a hide-out to some during the early years, was filled to the brim during the Thanksgiving Mass on September 24, 2011 when it was officially re-opened.

It was left in isolation for many years, partly due to wear and tear of certain parts and serious infestation of termites rendering it unsafe. Now that the chapel is up and going, more activities should be organised, making full use of the six-decade old landmark.

The chapel is accessible to virtually any group, not necessarily only religious bodies. It can be a place to fellowship, interact and reflect.

Even Brother Matthew Liew made his way from Kuala Lumpur to grace the occasion.

The turn-out was beyond expectation as those who came included many from outside Ipoh. Old boys, who included former teachers, clergies, parents who are true-blue Michaelians and the many contributors whose generosity have made the opening of the chapel possible.
I must thank the Centennial Committee members for spearheading the project, in line with our theme, "Cherishing Our Past, Embracing The Future".

A Brief Report On The Pre-OMA Dinner

Preparations were made days before the recently concluded 73rd OMA dinner held in the school. The last time time we held the dinner at St Michael's was in 1987, exactly 24 years ago. Most of the gatherings were organised at the Red Crescent Hall, near the stadium. The committee felt that this year, in preparation for the Centennial Dinner next year, we need to have a trial run to determine the logistics, organisation and maintenance aspects. Despite more involvements among the committee members, at the end, it was worth the efforts. We encountered setbacks and weaknesses but it was a lesson learnt. Organising a function this magnitude was interesting and challenging. Let's us flashback a little on the task we undertake to make such an enjoyable dinner for all.

Old Michaelians by the hundreds, to be exact 800, turned up excitedly at the alma mater on September 24, 2011 for a real fellowship and reunion. One could see dozens who came as early as 6pm, exploring the school and entering classes, possibly to reminisce their good ole' days with their classmates and teachers. A group of them even came up with stickers of SMI school badge and wore them proudly in and out the main hall. What an amazing spirit! The class of 60s did not lose out. They had their version of old Michaelian badge which they also wore throughout the function. Others? They just 'yam seng" and "yam seng" throughout the occasion, making the atmosphere splendidly lively!

Celebrants included those receiving their Diamond, Golden, Ruby and Silver jubilee salutation certificates. Dato’ Bro. Vincent Corkery gave out the certificates. Among those who left St Michael's 70 years ago (1941)-what a feat- are Dato’ Yeoh Kian Teik, Mr Ng Khoon Hong, Mr Wong Hon Choong, Mr Wong Kee Fah and Mr Chang Kong Foo. It was during the time of Brother Patrick O' Donovan that the Second World War broke out. The batch sat for their senior Cambridge in 1941 and the situation was tense. The answer scripts were sent immediately to Cambridge by the British. The scripts arrived safely. The boys took 4 years for them to see their results! They done well.

We are also honoured to have Brother Matthew Liew with us.

He is known as the "Batik Man". He is also known as the man with many talents. Brother Matthew Bay called it quits on 19 September 2011, a day after his birthday. His students best remember him for his knack in batik painting and his preferences for motifs on floral and the environment. Always seen holding a bunch of keys, sometimes a few bunches,

Brother had never failed to look into the details as far as building maintenance was concerned. During his tenure at St Michael's, virtually all areas of development were under his stewardship. The total revamp of the tuck-shop turned canteen turned foodcourt, the inter-locking bricks along the main building, designing and supervising the construction of the primary school building, the painting of the school, the La Salle Auditorium, the refurbishment of the main hall and recently the Chapel - just to name a few.

The La Salle Centre was devoid of lush greeneries, the pond, the aquariums and the unusually large fish tank until the arrival of Brother Matthew in 1991, exactly 20 years ago. The rambutan trees, the mango trees, starfruit, "dokong langsat", the giant palm trees and so many other plants and shrubs are results of a person full of patience, gentleness, meekness and knowledge. Yes, he also knows what friendship is all about.

Preparations For the Pre-Centennial Dinner

Workers started work at 1.30pm today (Friday) and when school ended at 6.45pm, they were still around putting up the canopies.This year's OMA 73rd dinner is covering three main areas - the main hall, the entire badminton court and the passage between the basketball court and the hall.

Saturday morning would be another busy day for another batch of workers as they prepare a total of 80 tables for our Michaelian folks to dine and fellowship.

Look out for specially-designed Centennial T-shirts. They are up for grabs with each costs RM50 but if you opt for a set of two, then you pay RM80. Colour? Green and White.

Car parks - There will be a few designated car parks which the committee has worked out.
1. Primary School Car park
2. TAIKO car park
3. SMI car park
4. Parking bays along the riverside, Jalan SP Seenivasagam and any designated bays.

Scouts, prefects and RELA personnels will be at hand to assist. The car parks have been fixed with lights to ensure security and safety. Please take care of your property.

A Glance At The Chapel - Architecturally and Aesthetically Superb!

It's all system go for tomorrow, Saturday at 10.30am. Turning back the clock, the chapel was just another "room" tucked at the 2nd floor corner of the main building. No one noticed its significance and importance. In fact, nobody talked about it until a few old boys recollected their past experiences. The Centennial Committee team moved from there and today, the chapel sees the light of day again.

Little is written about the school chapel. This under-publicised heritage of SMI, located on the 2nd floor of the main building and is linked to the quarters where the Brothers stayed, has been long "abandoned", as OMA president Adrian Tsen put it. He said during the 60s' until the early 80s' the chapel was a focal point among students who congregated there to sing hymns and started the day with words of prayers before proceeded to their respective classes.

"I remember the chapel was a place students would come together after school every Friday to have fellowship together. The singing created such pleasant and sweet atmosphere within the school compound. In other words, it was a place students found solace and peace," said Adrian, who studied in SMI during the 60s.

"They brought along their guitars and others would join in to sing along. It was such a pleasant sight to see Michaelians at a place they considered a sanctuary," said Cikgu Meor Idris, who has taught in SMI for the past 30 years.

He said the chapel was a favourite place among students.

"Some would sit outside the chapel reading their books and others would just fellowship inside. Masses would also be held for Catholic students. They liked the serenity and the soothing effects in the chapel," Meor said.

Background:

During World War 2, before St Michael's was occupied by the Japanese, its soldiers machine-gunned the building and seriously damaged the school roof. Looters stole furniture and books. They even tried to wrench the tabernacle from the altar of the chapel. It was soon that the chapel was converted into the State Legislative Council Chambers. The altar was removed and used as firewood. Here, the European and the Chinese with Japanese wives had to take a promise of allegiances to the Japanese Emperor.

Interviews with former teachers and old boys reveal that serious infestation by termites on the wooden panels around the altar, walls and ceilings also attributed to the closure of the chapel. Presently, the chapel is under the care of Brother Matthew Bay, who personally looks into its posterity, upkeep and maintenance.

Currently under extensive repairs in line with the roof replacement works of the main building, the chapel is set to shine again. Plans are afoot to restore the originality of the chapel, including looking into the architectural aspects and its outstanding work of art - the paintings and stained glass windows.

School principal Mr Phoon Choong Chee and OMA president Mr Adrian Tsen have expressed their desire to see a complete restoration of the chapel, after which the great activities of yesteryear are brought back again to resonate the atmosphere long missed by the school community. Many feel that, after decades of neglect, the chapel is to be accorded the status and recognition it truly deserves.

Unsolved Mysteries At St Michael's

The school basement is believed to be the starting point of the popular underground tunnel

“Last two tickets for the day, last two tickets” That is the call for people who want to travel in the “tunnel” from SMI to “Main Convent”.

Is there a tunnel at St Michael's? If yes, where is it? Tunnels have been discovered at the High Court, Railways Station and even the police station. It is not impossible to have one at St Michael's. There is no smoke without fire. Generations of Michaelians had this question and the only answer given by the Brothers or fellow Michaelians is “There is no such thing as a “tunnel” at SMI”.

Michaelians being Michaelians, never giving up their quest for the truth and have found a lead in solving the mystery. Since there is no way leading to the “tunnel” from the Chubb Door under the grand granite staircase, the only way will be from somewhere else.

“Mystery is finally resolved”
Upon close examination of a couple of photographs under Peter Khiew’s blog dated Friday, February 26, 2010 - h ttp://peterkhiew.blogspot.com/2010/02/grand-clean-up-do-at-st-michaels.html one will notice that there is a mysterious “ticket counter” at the basement of school stage.

The keeper of the Underground Tunnel. Question remains - Why a ticket counter at the basement?

It has wire-mesh barrier and a small window. As a student way back in 1980, I don’t quite remember this mysterious window for I only go under the stage for other reasons. As from the surviving architectural drawings of the stage, there is no indication of this mysterious window. Could it be a dark and well-guarded secret that it does not show even in the architectural drawings? I am sure it is not used as a window to hand over play costumes or apparels as it is too small in size.

There are several doors which lead to the front and back of the building and there is also a door that leads to ‘nowhere” !!!!.

Going back to the story of a mysterious “tunnel” that exists at SMI, could it be that you must buy your ticket here before moving through the “door to nowhere” into the “tunnel”.

An air outlet? St Michael's has always generated interests in many areas.

Perhaps Mr Timothy Chee, who has been actively involved in the production of school plays for more than 40 plays would be able to shed some light on this “mysterious window”. Brother Vincent and other retired teachers could share their knowledge on this “ticketing window” at the basement of the school stage.

On the other hands, we have to bury the ghost of the “Tunnel”, “door to nowhere” and the “Mystery Ticketing Counter” before our Centennial in 2012 as it has haunted us for long now. If Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel comes to know about this “Underground City” the school will be placed as national treasure under Badan Warisan or Muzium Negara.

Oops, before I forget, there is another mystery to be solved. The recent Lower Six girls claimed that the “tunnel” is not from SMI but from the Mosque. Hmmm…. Tunnel from the Mosque to Main Convent. What could be the connection here. Well, it is not our mystery anymore. Now it’s theirs.

As a reminder, SMI is not Sekolah Misteri Ipoh but St Michael's Institution.

Other Unsolved Mysteries at SMI.

1. Why are there flag poles at the top of the roof? They are located at the rear annexes of the main building. (Right at the top of our OMA Secretariat roof for which entrance is only through the chapel and the other pole at the roof of former OMA Secretariat which also houses the kitchen for the former Brothers’ Quarters)

2.The letter drop opening at the door of a classroom. A classroom door on the ground floor, right in front of our main assembly stage, has a cutting that assembles a letter drop cutting. What is it actually for and why is it here?

3.The answer for the following extract from Peter Khiew’s Blog :Thursday, October 08, 2009, Do You Know That...

Today, it came to our knowledge that a piece of iron ore, easily more than 100 kg, is kept somewhere in school. How is it got here and why it was acquired? These are answers we want to find out. Only the size of a rugby ball but a few people are needed to carry it!

4. SMI used to have a shooting range for the Cadet Corps. Where was the location of the shooting range?

5. Where was the old tuck-shop located at a distance from the school building?

6. Where is the location of the first school building, The Malay Bungalow?

7.There were three (3) LaSalle Brothers who served as Directors of SMI on two terms. Who are these Brothers?

8.Was there ever a bomb hoax at SMI and if yes which year?

9.There are hooks at the main granite staircase. Who placed the hooks there and for what purpose?

A Written Expression From An Old Boy About The Chapel

SMI's chapel holds a special place in my heart for numerous enriching reasons. Firstly, it was my spiritual sanctuary during the most trying period of my school days. I had numerous seemingly insurmontable problems between my Form 3 and 5 years.

My mother passed away in 1963 (when I was in form 3) and I fell into deep depression. I neglected my studies and was spiraling towards inevitable failure in the looming senior cambridge exam. On top of that I had to contend with 2 over-domineering and abusive elder brothers who were bent on breaking my spirit in their misguided belief that it was for my own good.
I was not a Christian but I turned to Mother Mary and Jesus Christ for help. I would go to the chapel daily and prayed for guidance. My prayers were answered through numerous indirect ways.
Rev. Bro. Dir. Ultan Paul gave me the reponsibility of painting "the stations of the cross" for the chapel. A Form Six female student, who was a very good painter, was assigned to assist me. We completed the paintings and they were hung in the chapel.
I managed to scrape through my senior Cambridge in 1965. And the following year, even managed to be the first Michaelian to be selected for the AFS student exchange programme for a year of stay in Illinois, USA(1966/67).

I believe strongly that it was my daily prayers in the chapel which gave me the spiritual strength to overcome all the odds and obtained divine grace for my success.
Today, I am a successful portrait painter with my own studio in Batu Ferringhi. But the greater miracle is that my spiritual beliefs have expanded and I embrace Taoism, Buddhism, Hinduism in addition to Christianity and Islam as divine truths.I believe that if we open our hearts to God, He will come to us in whichever form that our spiritual age is able to accept Him. After all he is omnipresent. And SMI's chapel was the starting point in which I experienced this truth.

2. Mr Adrian Tsen and Mr Joseph Michael Lee have both garnered a generous sponsorship of RM46,200 as at August 26, 2011 - personal contributions and their business associates.
3. Old boy Wong Kin Tung sponsored RM500 cash. He is attending the Talentime for two consecutive evenings! Many parents and well-wishers are doing likewise.
4. Bookings have been received from the public and old boys from the 70s and 80s to attend the Talentime which according to them is special and a recollection of yesteryear.

Flagpost & St Michael's Official Flag At The Central Gable

Notice something different at the central gable of the school building? Originally a flagpost was prominently placed there when St Michael's was taken over as an army base by the Japanese and British. Old photographs obtained from past issues of school magazines indicate the existence of a post. An inspection was carried out at the balcony last year and amazingly, we noticed three very strong metal flagpost holders being embedded in the concrete portion of the balcony, irrefutably to hold the pole

Why was the pole removed? Just like the two Japanese poles now lying idle at the La Salle Centre... "The Japanese Advance troops entered Ipoh on 28 December 1941 and found a ready made shelter at St Michael's Institution. The school was used as "Perak Shu Seicho", the Japanese Government Building in Ipoh. The entire school building was used to house various government offices." - extracted from My Story, 1994.
While memories of the Japanese occupation of the building have long forgotten by many, plaques put up over the years like the ones at the granite staircase and the chapel (State Legislative Council Chambers) somehow remind us of those war years of hardship and great endurance on the part of the Brothers, teachers and students alike.
Another discovery: Two very thick, heavily-rusty flagposts used by army officers during the Japanese era are currently lie in solitary, partially covered by shrubs.Surprisingly, the relics are still in considerably good conditions even after decades of expose to the elements.
These items bear strong historical and heritage significance. They are almost 70 years old and plans are already on to identify the exact location where the poles were placed before they were taken down.

From a post dated October 12, 2009. "After much researching, an old photo, dated back to the 60s', effectively tells the exact position of the poles used by the Japanese and the British. Official and ceremonious gatherings were normally carried out at the centre of the premises, in this case, the central gable of St Michael's. There are two posts, similar to the ones at the La Salle Centre, could be clearly seen standing with great pride. Another one, a shorter pole, is at the balcony. All three had been removed but the stand to hold the smaller pole is still visible.

Fast Forward To August 2011.. The post has been replaced, mainly because of many concerned old boys who feel that originality must take its precedence. It took just five minutes, during a get-together, to raise the fund to acquire the flagpost and flag. A standing ovation for these guys! The school crest, meticulously sewn, is now prominently displayed on the flag. One can easily see the flag from the main road or even the Ipoh Padang. The school flag can actually make us hum the School Rally.

As posters and banners are adorning the school now, the atmosphere is felt

Today, posters were being displayed. We had put up at least three buntings for publicity purposes.The parlour is again chosen as the happening place to publicise our Michaelian Talentime. A bigger banner will be placed outside the school in a day or two.
The blogger can be seen hanging some posters at the school parlour. Only now I realise that the ladder was too short and it was quite high up there. Fortunately, three Form One boys came running to help. One to hold the ladder, another two helped to string the posters.
Tomorrow, Wednesday will be another busy day. I will get Form Two boys to assist and search for a taller ladder. More posters will be up then.
Things are running well at St Michael's.

Retirement of Mr Phoon Chong Chee - We thank you for your service at St Michael's.

Mr Phoon Chong Chee served at St Michael's from November 16, 2005 to August 18, 2011-a tenure of almost 6 years. He started teaching at SMK Seri Tanjung in Kuala Selangor in 1977 before he was transferred to Malay College Kuala Kangsar in January 1985. He was in MCKK for almost 7 years when he was promoted as an afternoon senior assistant at St George's Taiping.

His service was recognised by the Education Ministry when he received a promotion letter in January 1994 - as a senior assistant of students affairs. In April 2004, Mr Phoon was again promoted, this time as senior assistant (administrative) at SMK Kamunting, Perak. His last port of call was to be a principal at St Michael's in 2005.

Appreciation Dinner hosted by Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian, Mr Adrian Tsen and Mr Michael Joseph Lee.

The Michaelian fraternity expresses our gratitude and appreciation to Mr Phoon Chong Chee for his service here. During his tenure as a head of department, his main contention has always been to the elevation of status of St Michael's in the areas of academic, discipline and sports. In his quest towards these areas, his heart has never forgotten "the last, the lost and the least".

A get-together to say a million thank you.

The press conference to highlight our programs, Centennial Celebration and Michaelian Talentime, was a huge success. It was attended by Dato Brother Vincent Corkery, Mr Adrian Tsen, Mr Joseph Michael Lee and Mr Phoon Chong Chee.
Also in support of the event, which was held at the La Salle Auditorium, were Brother Matthew Bay, Mr Harneak Singh and Mr Thomas Wong.
Pictures were also taken of the Michaelian Talentime participants at the Main Hall.
We invited pressmen from the local papers and most of them turned up. We thank The Star (Sara), The New Straits Times (Chandran), Ipoh Echo (James Gough), Perak News (Avinesh) and Sin Chew (Kong) for giving your support to St Michael's.

The two masters - Thomas Choo and Timothy Chee. They pose in front of a mural painted by Timothy some 25 years ago. We hope the school will retain the mural for posterity. The other one is near the Marian Library. All the other masterpieces are gone due to age and natural elements.

St Michael's old boys, former teachers, one a Queen's Scout and the other a King's Scout paid a visit to the alma mater for a stroll down memory lane. Master Thomas is a Queen's Scout and Master Timothy, the King's. Both still look very fit, judging from their posture, voice and body weight. Timothy visits the gym without fail every morning while Thomas does what he learnt in school - community service. He regularly goes around helping the poor, giving his time and resources to homes for the disabled and underpriviledged children.

Brotherly bonding - The brothers and Mr Solaiappan, the kacang putih man. They have known each other for almost half a century.

Timothy Chee, besides toning up his muscles, also keeps himself busy doing artwork, updating his Facebook quite frequently and occasionally travels to KL to help his son in his work.
Both felt so happy to be back in school. We wish them well.

St Michael's Centennial Signboard Is Up!

Centennial signboard stands proudly fronting the alma mater.

At about 3pm on Saturday, August 6, a 16-foot signboard specially designed to usher in the Centennial Celebration was put up fronting the Ipoh Padang, thus visually accessible to virtually everyone who passes by Jalan S.P. Seenivasagam (previously Clayton Road).
On the signboard, which details the ideals of La Salle education and its mission, also honours outstanding and remarkable luminaries like John Baptist de La Salle, founder Father JB Coppins, first headmaster Mr P.J. Morsingh, architect of St Michael's building, Brother Vernier Augustus, Brother Ultan Paul and Brother Vincent Corkery.
We also honour our illustrious old boy and benefactor Mr Adrian Tsen, former principal Mr Louis Rozario Doss, PIBG chief Mr Joseph Michael Lee, former teachers Master Timothy Chee and Mr Noel Oliveiro.
We remember St Michael's debaters and great sportsmen like Dato Tan Yee Khan, Dato Ng Boon Bee, Mr Foo Keat Seong and Mr Louis Rodrigues. Personalities like Brother Matthew Bay and Brother Visitor Edmundo Fernandez are also being depicted.

Symbolically represented on the banner is an old photo of the La Salle Brothers. They represent the tireless efforts and true sacrifices towards education of all Brothers in Malaysia and around the world today. We also credit past and current educators at St Michael's.
Centennial celebrations are only made complete when the current generations of Michaelians and Lasallians are mentioned. The banner rightly portrays the photo of a group of young men looking smart, confident and orderly. These are the traits St Michael's has successfully groomed in its boys and girls - past and present.

On The Multi-purpose hall: ALL MICHAELIANS MUST PLAY A ROLE!

As a famous educational institution, SMI has cultivated a large number of outstanding talents for nearly a century, talents who have been making contributions to the development of the country and parts of the world. The year 2012 will witness the 100th anniversary of SMI.

It’s a centennial event – only once in 100 years. 100 years of history is a very significant milestone for any institution. Over this period, thousands of students have passed through the portals of this school - and who are now living in various parts of Malaysia and the world; raising families, making invaluable contributions in their respective fields of work and leading meaningful lives. Never forget your alma mater, and where you came from.
Once students graduate, they often look to the next phase of their lives, leaving behind their alma mater and forgetting what it took to get them to graduation. Towards this end, the alumni can play an enormous role in an institution. They can support scholarships, give monies toward the operating budget, to fund innovative retention programs and volunteer in helpful ways.

A series of programmes should be planned in the run-up to the school's 100th-year anniversary in 2012, including a fundraising 100th Anniversary Homecoming Dinner for its planned multi-purpose hall.
At the same time, the school must preserve its ethos for it to make a distinction and excel through the ages, and the preservation of the culture and tradition of the school is important for it to retain its prestige and excellence. It was rather disheartening to get to know that the tradition of dramas discontinued this year, and replaced by a talent event.
During the 100th year anniversary next year, we celebrate the thousands of Michaelians it has educated and nurtured. We also celebrate the teachers who have served the school with dedication and commitment. Most of all, we celebrate the school, which has contributed immensely to nation-building.
Without the necessary funding, the school community would never be able to afford to construct a new multipurpose hall. It will be an impossible dream. (I’m sure nothing is impossible for the school – look at the new primary school building!). This is not a small amount of money, but SMI is confident that through the strong support of everyone including the community members – we will be able to raise the required amount.
If you had a great time and appreciate what SMI did to make you who you are today, then join the effort to make the project a possibility and contribute financially and volunteer with your alma mater. Your donations, no matter how insignificant they might seem to you is appreciated. Indirectly, you are also investing in the future of nation-building, especially the young ones.

The Visit of The Honorable Brother Visitor Edmundo Fernandez

The banner we put up to welcome Brother Visitor Edmundo.
It is now kept at the Michaelian Heritage Gallery to commemorate the visit.

Brother Visitor Edmundo Fernandez made an official working visit to St Michael's on July 20, 2011 at 7.30am, meeting up with the teachers and students at the assembly ground. He was accompanied by Dato' Brother Vincent Corkery, Brother Thomas Lavin, Brother Anthony Rogers and Brother Matthew Bay.

Brother Edmundo is currently serving under the newly-formed LEAD which stands for Lasallian East Asia District, which covers seven countries - Hong Kong, Japan, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, each headed by a Sector Director.
Previously, the region of Pacific Asia was named PARC region, one of the six regions in the Lasallian world.

PARC (Pacific Asia Regional Conference) consisted of :
1. District of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea

2. Lasallian East Asia District

3. District of Colombo

4. Delegation of India.

In total there were 16 countries in PARC which included Indonesia.

The visit brought glitters of the Lasallian charisma to SMI.

PARC was later reconstituted with the inauguration of a new district known as the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD).
The name LEAD was chosen after a period of consultation of all the Brothers in each Sector, the Alliance Council, and the General Council.
At the meeting, Brother Edmundo Fernandez was appointed Brother Visitor while Brother Thomas Lavin holds the post as the Auxillary Visitor.
Brother Anthony Rogers is the Sector Director for Malaysia and his office is based at the La Salle Provincialate in Petaling Jaya.
The new Provincial offices for LEAD is located at La Salle College, Kowloon, Hong Kong.

LEAD was launched in Singapore on May 15, 2011 while Malaysia inaugurated the new district in a simple yet significant ceremony at the La Salle University Hall in Petaling Jaya on May 21, 2011.

An Eventful 84th Sports Day

Themed, "Cherishing Our Past, Embracing The Future", St Michael's marched into the Centennial celebration with a bang! Attended by some 2,000 students, parents and old boys, the Sports Day truly reflected the spirit of valor, unity and a sense of pride of all Michaelians.

Participants gave their best in the 100m, 200m, 400m and inter-schools relays.
Event that stole the limelight year after year was the colourful and vibrant march past participated by students of all classes. For three weeks, our boys and girls practised very hard to deliver their very best. Each tried to outdo one another and that spirit was instrumental in making the march past even more interesting.

One student said that the inter-class march past was the reason he came to school even on a Saturday. Many cancelled their tuition classes while a handful postponed their trips outstation - all for the sake of witnessing the march past and to meet up their friends.

Preparations For Sports Day

Unusually hot weather takes a heavy toll on the grass which has turned brown.

Fortunately, afternoon session teachers and students ensure the grass stays alive by giving the lawn a generous amount of water every evening. Thanks Cikgu Zulkarnain!

A Multi-Purpose Hall At St Michael's

The Centennial Hall at SMI?

Ever since we posted the article on June 18 about the multi-purpose hall, we have been bombarded with calls and e-mails about the project. Many wanted to find out more about it. Obviously, these people sounded extremely excited and voiced their support for such project.
As stated earlier, we can hold and organise Old Michaelians Association related functions like its annual banquet and annual gatherings. The hall would be the perfect venue for badminton, table-tennis, swimming pool and many more indoor games. We can also hold seminars, talks and conferences catering to professionals.
As spacious and strategically-located multi-purpose halls are scarce in Ipoh, the SMI hall could accommodate the needs to run computer and book fairs, wedding receptions and activities involving youths and adults.
The hall can serve as excellent venue to hold private functions for annual corporate dinners by staff and employees from factories, offices and multi-national companies.
We can also have a corner for cafeteria, catering to old boys and former teachers, which brings us to the idea of setting up a Club House for old Michaelians.
The hall could also cater comfortably for the school drama, accommodating a bigger number of audience and offering a better sound system.

St Michael's Club House?

This project is undoubtedly St Michael's most notable project to usher in its Centennial Celebrations.

Many are keeping their fingers crossed as to how we can help realise the building of the hall which might come to a region of RM5 million.

Well-wishers, benefactors, old boys, near and far, have to be roped in for support.

Again we have to appeal to Mr Adrian Tsen, the President of OMA, to make another Michaelian dream come true. PIBG chairman Mr Joseph Michael Lee, who also sits on the Centennial Celebration committee, can definitely help to work that dream. We need these duo to be the driving force!

Arrival Of Brother Edmundo Fernandez fsc to SMI Ipoh

The Michaelian fraternity would like to extend its warm welcome to Brother Visitor, Brother Edmundo Fernandez (above), Brother Thomas Lavin and Brother Anthony Rogers to St Michael's tomorrow (Tuesday).
Filipino Brother Edmundo Fernandez was appointed Visitor of the Lasallian East Asia District (LEAD) by Superior General Brother Álvaro Rodríguez Echeverría FSC.
The new District was inaugurated on May 15 and is part of the Pacific-Asia Regional Conference (PARC).
LEAD will include Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Singapore. Brother Edmundo has been a Brother for 21 years and is currently Visitor of the Philippines District with a network of 17 schools.
Br. Edmundo is also a member of the Board of Trustees of De La Salle, Canlubang.

Trip To Tanjung Tualang, Perak - Astounding Success

Thirty eight Form Two boys, mainly from the Crime Prevention Club, made a visit to a palm oil plantation managed by the Riverview Rubber Estates Bhd at Tanjung Tualang in Perak. The arrival of the boys and a teacher Mr Lawrence were greeted by estate's senior manager Mr Leong Heng Khoon and his subordinates, led by Riverview's executive director Mr Adrian Tsen. Also present during the visit were Dato Brother Vincent Corkery, Mr Phoon Chong Chee, Brother Matthew Bay and committee members of the Old Michaelians Association, among others Mr Yong Sin Wah, Mr Terry Yip, Mr Anthony Lourdes and Mr Gnanasagaran.

For St Michael's, educational field trips like this have many advantage. We feel that the trip itself is fun and creates a bond among those taking part in it.
The boys are actually going to where the experts are thus they have the opportunity to learn a lot from.

The entourage was taken to the plantation itself where they witnessed the plucking of the fruits, how the matured fruits were loaded into the carriers and how trees are cared for and maintained for better yields.
A powerpoint presentation was also carried out by Mr Leong detailing the historical background of palm oil, types, countries involved in the planting and its potential for the next 15 years.

We were later feted to an excellent meal of fried chicken, noodles and fruits at the grounds of a 98 years old bungalow,

Lasallian Expedition & Development Camp 2011

The boys who will be attending the camp coming Friday.

It is time of the year again to see 25 enthusiastic Form Two boys embark on a journey to Kuala Kangsar to take part in the Lasallian Expedition and Development Camp at Ulu Kenas Forest Reserve, some 20 km from the royal town. Preparations started five weeks ago with the school identifying the students, interviewing them for suitability, obtaining their particulars and getting their parents' consent. After that, approval has to be obtained from the Education Department. Nevertheless, it was worth the effort.
LEAD was the result from an initiative by the Malaysian delegation who participated in Asia Pacific Lasallian Youth Convention 6 (Sydney) 2001 where they hatched the idea from the Australian delegation.
The first LEAD in Malaysia was held in June 2002. It is an outdoor adventure camp for 3 days, 2 nights, catering for students from specific Lasallian schools. It is a team-building, self-development and character-building program. Our trip this year starts Friday, 8 July to Sunday 10 July 2011.
St Michael's would like to put on record a word of appreciation to the Chairman of public-listed company, Riverview Rubber Estates Berhad, Ms Juliana Manohari Devadason and Executive Director Mr Adrian Tsen for making the camp possible for the boys.

Vintage KDK Fan Found Its Way To The Gallery

Now, the fan gets a place at the gallery.

I have been eyeing the vintage KDK fan when I chanced upon it a year ago at the PERBAMA (Bahasa Malaysia Society) room. It works very well, with quiet motor and blades which propel strong wind. Even the regulator is still working. The fan has the ability to rotate 360 degrees, a feature which is not easy to come by these days.

After identifying a spot at the gallery, it was time to get the fan over. The vintage fan is now installed at the side of the main door. As for the room where the fan was taken from, we asked the electrician to fix another fan inside - a Panasonic.

Talk On The Michaelian Tradition

Mr Louis Rozario Doss was at St Michael's to give a talk on the Michaelian heritage and tradition. The event, part of the line-up in conjunction with the school's centennial celebration program, was aimed at instilling in the boys a renewed strength in their faith, zeal and service to the community.

Mr Louis touched on the many Michaelians and Lasallians who excelled remarkably well in their areas of studies and now taking root at the upper echelons of government, industry and society.

He said that Lasalle schools stand for:
1.Excellence in teaching
2.The importance of community
3. Service to the poor
4. Education that fosters faith development

First former Jack, the great grandson of Master Lim Guan Choe, the first headmaster of SMI Primary One, was introduced to Mr Louis who was obviously thrilled to meet the young boy.

The Form One and Form Two students obviously felt rejuvenated and inspired after the talk. The Form Four students are waiting for their session with Mr Louis. Lower Six students, who are from many different schools, should also be given the Lasallian exposure.

Herbert Kotalawela- SMI Lab Assistant Promoted

Thank you Herbert for your years at St Michael's.

Mr Herbert has been with St Michael's for more than 30 years. When the letter came early this month asking him to report to work at SRJK (C) Sam Tet, he was undoubtedly heavy-hearted as he has virtually spent most of his working life as a lab assistant at St Michael's. Doing clerical duties at his new port of call would be so different but for Herbert, it would just be another vocation.
"Surely I will miss St Michael's but the working culture I learnt here would come in handy at anywhere I work", said Herbert. He bid farewell to his colleagues with a very heavy heart on the last working day.
Brother Vincent has this to say. " Mr Herbert will be a gift from St Michael's to Sam Tet. He has carried out a tremendous work here. We are going to miss him very much".

KL Alumni Visit To Alma Mater

A visit to the alma mater by members of the SMI Alumni KL, headed by its president Mr Michael Lip, brought back many happy memories for some old boys who shared about their school days with student leaders.
Earlier, the alumni were ceremoniously welcomed by the Michaelian Military Band and school administrators. Programs included giving out of bursary, cheque presentation to the PIBG and MMB and walk down memory lane, which included a visit to the chapel and Michaelian Heritage Gallery.
Old boys who shared their stories were Mr Henry Kok King Yan,Mr Louis Rodrigues, his wife Mrs Anne Rodrigues, Mr Adrian Rodrigues, Mr Thomas Nathan and Major Dato' Salehuddin.

Below is a write-up I posted on March 10, 2010.

Imagine having our Old Michaelians Association reunion banquet at a hall near the school and walk down memory lane after dinner. Look at this possibility, which is not impossible, as the old boys have been renting the hall of Red Crescent for years to hold its celebrations do.
The hall, to be administered by the La Salle secretariat, could also cater comfortably for the school drama, accommodating a bigger number of audience and offering a better sound system.

St Michael's to have a hall like this? How wonderful.

We must say that St Michael's has never failed to realise its dream of achieving anything because its fraternity believes in the impossible.

Three years ago, no one would have thought of having a four-storey primary school building built to replace the five-decade old, dilapidated St Michael's 1 and 2 premises.

Now, the U-Paul Building stands proudly to greet its sons day and night, a clear testimony of individuals who want to make a change.

The walkway, the pavilion, the OMA secretariat, the passage to the school office, the changing of rooftop and the completed work at the 50-year-old science laboratory are St Michael's notable and inspiring projects to usher in its Centennial Celebrations, comes 2012.

"The realisation of a new hall, theatre and multi-storeyed car park building is likened to placing the last piece into the jigsaw puzzle- a culmination of sorts for the Michaelian Agenda," said Mr Phoon Chong Chee, SMI principal.

Mr Adrian Tsen, president of the OMA, had once brought up this ambitious project with the old boys during one of the meetings. Known for his prowess in far-sightedness and being a visionary, the school hopes that Mr Adrian could review the project again.

Perhaps, the PIBG head, Mr Joseph Michael Lee, Dato' Seri Lee Oi Hian, chairman of the Board of Governors, parents and well-wishers could be roped in too to make this another reality.

Note from the Editorial: The response is amazing from many old boys, parents and Ipoh folks. Some of the feedbacks are:

a. Not only OMA related functions but wedding receptions, birthday dinners and annual gatherings can be held in the hall. The secretariat will work out the rental.

MALAYSIAN UNIVERSITY ENGLISH TEST (MUET).

It's good news. St Michael's scored excellently in MUET this year, with one student getting a band 6, a perfect score. A band 6 student is defined as a very good user and has a very good command of the language. He or she is highly expressive, fluent, accurate and appropriate language: hardly any inaccuracies. Possesses a very good understanding of language and contexts. Functions extremely well in the language.

Out of 174 students, one got a band 6. He is TUNG KENG FAI from USS1, a Michaelian since Form One. Thirty three scored band 5, 83- band 4, 57 scored band 3 and 17 with band 2. None got band 1. What excites Michaelians is we are better than many schools with Form Six in Perak, beating even ACS. Our long-standing tradition in English speaking culture bears fruit. Congratulations, Tung and all others, including teachers!

Sincere Gift to Alma Mater

FIFTY years after they left school, a group of former students from St. Michael’s Institution, Ipoh donated RM50,000 towards the Michaelians Give Back Fund at the school’s alumni dinner recently.

Speaking on behalf of the 16 “old boys” present at the dinner – who completed their Form Five in 1961 – Choo Jee Sam said that members of the group from that year, who now reside in the Klang Valley, meet up every two months for friendship and networking.

It was during one of these sessions that they decided to raise the sum RM50,000 — or RM1,000 for each year since they had left the school.

Proceeds from the Give Back Fund are donated to the school to disburse to needy students to help them continue their studies there, including covering costs for books, uniforms, and commuting to school.

“Our group includes prominent lawyers, architects, engineers, government servants, other professionals and businessmen who are all successful in their own ways,” said Choo.

“We all have fond memories of St. Michael’s and are grateful for the solid educational foundation, the discipline, camaraderie and the ‘Michaelian spirit’ which shaped us to be what we are today.

“While few of us continued after leaving school to obtain a degree, for most of us, it was hard work and perseverance which made us successful,” he added.

Students and teachers alike also recalled their memories of their time at the school.

“St. Michael’s has character, and the brothers and teachers placed the interests of the students first,” said former teacher Jeyaram Nair, who taught Geography at the school from 1961 to 1974.

Jerry Rajendram, who completed Form Five in 1978, also fondly remembers his late teacher Eugene Almeida and his hockey coach Noel Oliveiro. He proudly recalled that the hockey team from St. Michael’s was the first school team to represent Perak for the Razak Cup (now the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup).

“Brother Ultan Paul, Brother Vincent Corkery, Louis Rodrigues and Oh Teik Toh were amazing teachers who made us who we are today,” said Rajendram.

On a humorous note, student Ralph Steven Davies, who left the school in 1966, recalled the time when he went to the school tuck shop (now called “food court”) to buy several pieces of ice cream potong for his friends.

“I put them in my trouser pocket and was caught by Brother Paul (the principal) who detained me while the ice cream melted, staining my pants, before he let me go,” said Davies, now a senior executive with a public listed company.

“The greatest thing about St. Michael’s was the friends, camaraderie and the freedom to just be yourself,” said financial consultant Adrian Ho, who completed Form Six in 1994.

“Besides academic study, my participation in extra-curricular activities such as societies, sports and school plays all provided a holistic education which helped me able to deal with the real world.

“Meanwhile, the teachers were also a big influence,” he added.

Ho fondly recalled Brother Gerry Louis, who directed the school’s production of The Wizard of Oz, which Ho acted in. The play was also where he met his future wife; they now have two children.

Information Technology project manager Chan Yat Choong cherishes the many good friends he made at St. Michael’s since Year One, 30 years ago, and how the school provided them with the building blocks which helped them succeed in adulthood.

“The friendships were great. Although we got into trouble, we learned to trust people and today, I trust my new colleagues from the start. As a result, our company has a closely knit team,” said Chan.

Grand Old Dame - Our Pride

Works are currently underway to give a new coat of paint to the building. The massive project, part of St Michael's centennial line-up, does not only involve the facade but all the classrooms as well. The colour schemes for the classroom were discussed during the centennial committee meeting held on May 27. Pink and violet are totally out.
Students can look forward to studying in a more positive classroom which creates a cheerful and inspirational environment soon when we see coats of medium green or light blue adorning the walls.
The facade, currently spots a pale yellow tone, will soon get a coat of Banana White ICI paint. It would definitely make St Michael's even grander.
Works are carried out during the 2-week holidays. After that, painting resumes only on weekends. Completion is expected in September 2011.

The Drama Section- A Visit To the Gallery was one of the programmes planned for the students.

Trophies, once abandoned, have now found a place at the gallery. Notice the bell? Despite the missing holder, it still stands proud.

Undoubtedly, a visit to the gallery was a worth-while affair. To think of it, I am proud to categorically say that St Michael's has never lost its lustre.

As of May 28, 2011, there are 220 Form Six students. We have 5 Science classes with 150 students while 70 students are in three Art classes. We welcome all of you to St Michael's.

Sybil Kathigasu Remembered At SMI

Come June 12, it will be exactly 63 years since Sybil Kathigasu, the freedom fighter, died.

Sybil is the only Malaysian woman to have ever received the distinguished George Medal (GM) for gallantry and bravery. Instituted by the late King George VI, the GM recognises both civilian gallantry in the face of enemy action and brave deeds.

She wrote a book “No Dram of Mercy”, which gives an insightful account of a woman of great courage who should be held as a beacon and role model to all Malaysians.
In the 1940s, Sybil sacrificed a great deal in the fight for freedom of Malaya.
Born on Sept 3, 1899 in Medan, Indonesia, Sybil Medan Daly a Singhalese Sri Lankan was a trained nurse and midwife.

In 1919 she married Dr Abdon Clement Kathigasu and they were blessed with two daugthers, Olga and Thavam. Later on, the couple adopted a son, William Pillay.
Sybil and Abdon operated a clinic in Brewster Road, now known as Jalan Sultan Idris Shah in Ipoh, Perak, for 14 years before the war descended on them.
Sybil’s warmth, readiness to help and her fluency in Cantonese made her popular with the local Chinese community.
Then came the war and the invasion of Malaya by the Japanese army in 1941.
When the Japanese army occupied Ipoh, Sybil and her family moved away to Papan, a small town fringing Ipoh.
Papan would soon prove to become a turning point in Sybil’s life.
It was here that Sybil began “consolidating” her commitment to helping the local community who were members of the Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA).
Sybil secretly supplied medicines, medical services and information to the underground guerilla forces of the Fifth Independent Regiment of MPAJA freedom fighters who camped in nearby hills and jungles.
She also secretly kept shortwave radio sets and clandestinely listened to BBC broadcasts to keep in touch with the situation around the world, especially in Britain and Europe.
Those acts were, at the time, considered criminal and highly subversive by the military administration of Japan in Malaya.
No betrayal
It has been told and retold by many that Sybil and her husband had treated more than 6,000 guerilla fighters who fought relentlessly for the independence of Malaya.
Eventually Sybil and her husband were caught. The Japanese army arrested them in 1943.
They promised to release Sybil and her husband but on condition that she revealed the names of the MPAJA forces.
But Sybil was adamant and refused to do so.
In fact, she is said to have told the Japanese government that she was “willing to die with my family, then disclose the 30,000 MPAJA and family members who fought for independence of Malaya”.
Sybil was prepared to face the punishment by the Japanese army.
They punished her husband, son and her daughter Thavam, who was then seven years old.
But Sybil, who suffered the anguish of knowing her family’s pain, did not relent.
She refused to betray the MPAJA members and their families. Finally, Sybil was sent to Batu Gajah prison where she was further tortured.

Tortured and tormented

According to her memoir, the Japanese army sprayed soap water into her vagina and forced her to sit for hours on ice cubes and she was not allowed to sleep.
Sybil survived three years of torture and torment under the Japanese army and was only relased after Japan lost the war.
Following her release, Sybil was flown to Britain for medical treatment. It was there that she wrote her now famous memoir, “No Dram of Mercy”.
She went on to write a second book “Face of Courage”, which gave a revealing insight into her family.
But the three years of incessant torture by the Japanese army took its toll on Sybil.
Sybil died on June 12, 1948, in Britain, seven months after she was released from her Batu Gajah prison cell.
Her body was initially buried in Lanark, Scotland, but was later returned to Ipoh and buried at the Roman Catholic cemetery beside St Michael’s Church.
The older generation who are familiar with the Sybil Kathigasu story recalled how her remains arrived in Penang from Scotland by ship and transported to her home in Ipoh’s Brewster Road.
It was one of the largest funeral processions ever seen in Malaysia.

Royal-style sendoff
Sybil, the Malayan heroine, was treated in royal style. Some 100,000 people from all over the country turned up to say goodbye. Even people from as far as Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia came to pay their respects.

In Ipoh, a road is named after her to commemorate her bravery and Sybil’s shophouse at 74, Main Road, Papan, is now being presevered by Law Siak Hong, the president of the Perak Heritage Society.
In 2008, the Actor Studio’s in Kuala Lumpur produced a play and trained her grand-niece Elaine Daly to play the title role of “Sybil”.
There’s also a Singapore TV drama series titled “The Price of Peace” about her life.
Sybil’s life is perhaps the best example of unity – an Singhalese Sri Lankan women who willingly sacrificed her life for MPAJA members who were mostly Chinese who fought for the independence of Malaya.

How We Salvaged A Forty-Year Old Table

Just like an unpolished stone, this table was discarded and left to rot outside the school main hall, unwanted. Probably no one realised its aesthetic value and hidden charm.

It was left there for quite a while.We did not know how it got there.

The table top was in bad shape with its surface all roughed up over the years of neglect. The Michaelian Heritage team recognised its potential, believing that the table, probably about 40 years old, can be restored.

Quickly, we enlisted the help of about ten Form One boys to get it carted from the ground floor to the first floor. It was hard work, considering its weight but the writing table finally found a safe place.

We then contacted our regular carpenter man. He was somewhere at the old town when he received our call.

The condition of the table when the team spotted it. It is so heavy that we needed about 10 Form One students to carry the table to the gallery.

The table is examined closely before works are carried out. The Heritage team ensures that items meant for restoration are strictly reinstated to their original condition.

The first thing he said about the table was it is an exquisite item. "Just take a look at the wood. It is hardwood and nowadays we cannot find anymore of this material. Look at the drawers and the four legs. They are all hand-made using basic carpentry tools," Ah Choy, who has some 30 years of experience under his sleeves, said.

Tomorrow...we shall take a look at the writing table after it was restored.

Bandboys - You Are The Pride Of SMI

A write-up on MMB in 1963

Michaelian Military Band has been around since 1960. For more than 50 years, the boys have never failed to impress everyone, in school, at state functions, National Day parades or exchange programmes between schools. This indispensable entity of SMI plays a very important part in school functions during visits of foreign and local dignitaries, ministers, guests or old boys. They are the ones who, with their drums, clarinets and trumpets, make the occasions joyous and meaningful. We salute these disciplined and highly committed young men for their untiring efforts for the love of St Michael's.

Today, Michaelian Military Band is strong, steadily growing in sync with St Michael's. The recent public concert at Dewan Puan Sri Leong Wan Ching said it all. Strongly supported by parents and public at large, the hall was filled with eager and enthusiastic audience, about 400, wanting to witness the group many people have been talking about. Just after the second number, "Romanesque" by James Swearingen, the audience knew the band has the substance.

Concerts like this should be performed at a hall with acoustics properties, emphasizing on how sound travels from the musicians to a listener, including reflections from the walls, ceiling, floor and other objects. They were at a multi-purpose hall. Overlooking all these, the boys still managed to pull through with gusto!

Their final numbers of "Bridge Of Glory" and "We Are The World" by Frank Bernaerts, a verdict was reached. The boys were able to impress the crowd.

Hats off to advisers, Mr Liew Boon Keat and Mr Tiong Hong Chai for a marvelous job. To the boys, a splendid and superb performance.

April 8, 2011 - Simultaneously held during the morning assembly were the launching of St Michael's Centennial Celebration 1912-2012, "Michaelian Spirit" booklets, officiating of the La Salle Auditorium (formerly Lecture Theatre) and the dedication of the Michaelian Heritage Gallery.

It was an occasion witnessed by the entire school community as afternoon session, for the first time, was represented by its Form One and Two students and teachers.

Truly the centenary atmosphere can be strongly felt in St Michael's. The efforts of the centennial committee for the past six months have yielded fruits. I congratulate the committee for a job well done in reviving the many lost touches we had once in St Michael's.
